Event Overview and Partnerships
On September 17, 2022, iGEN coordinated an environmental clean-up at Ghajn Tuffieha beach in Malta as part of World Cleanup Day 2022. Eighty-five volunteers removed 1359.4 kilograms of litter from the coastal zone, adjacent roadsides, and the Riviera carpark perimeter. The initiative operated under the Saving Our Blue umbrella and required coordination with multiple local organizations. Ambjent Malta rangers, directed by Gordon Portelli, documented the operation and weighed the collected waste for national statistics. The Emergency Fire Rescue Unit deployed ten personnel alongside a fire engine and an ambulance. Mgarr Council Executive Secretary Paul Cyprian Dalli allocated a parking section for the base camp and arranged transport logistics.Volunteer Coordination and Execution
Base camp operations commenced at 15:00, with volunteer registration beginning at 16:00. Staff divided participants into teams and distributed protective gloves, bin bags, and high-visibility vests. The workforce included representatives from eleven iGEN members: Videoslots, Games Global, Betsson, Raketech, Aspire Global, Trustly, Entain, Glitnor, Suprnation, GamingMalta, and Everymatrix. KPMG contributed approximately forty employees to the effort. Teams assigned to distant zones used portable luggage scales to measure waste before transporting it to the central weighing station. The clean-up proceeded in temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius. While standard beach areas were addressed, the operation prioritized locations along the main approach roads. The Emergency Fire Rescue Unit managed waste extraction from restricted zones that required vehicle access.
This event marked iGEN’s third environmental initiative of 2022, following previous clean-up campaigns organized for Earth Day and World Oceans Day.
